Mother. Grandmother. Caregiver. Advocate. BSW, MSW. Twenty years in, and still showing up.
She didn’t set out to become a caregiver. Life just happened, and she didn’t have a choice but to show up.
Her daughter started having seizures at four months old. Her son was born with a congenital vascular ring, an artery from his heart wrapped around his esophagus, which caused severe oxygen deprivation for the first fifteen months of his life, developmental delay, and a later diagnosis of MODY diabetes. Her uncle, who lives with schizophrenia, has been in her home for more than twenty-five years.
She is not a professional writing a guidebook. She is a mother, a grandmother and a full time caregiver who wrote the thing she needed at 3 a.m. and could not find on any shelf.
And in the middle of all of it, she is still learning to care for herself.
She is also the author of Beyond Limitations: A Story Every Family Needs, book one of the I Am Not My Disability series, a children’s book about resilience and inclusion.
When she is not advocating or caregiving, you will find her worshipping in her car with the windows down, walking in faith one day at a time.
